After much thought, I decided that Nelson Mandela was most influential, especially in Africa. Before becoming the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, Nelson had been imprisoned for twenty seven years for his role in the anti apartheid movement. His strong belief in equality and the reconciliation between races eventually lead to the transition multi racial democracy in South Africa, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
Africans have since followed in Mandela’s peaceful activist approaches. There are much less racial or tribal related conflicts. The environment has become relatively stable, encouraging more trade and technology advancements. People no longer focus on their most basic essentials, but look toward future planning and innovation because of Mandela’s pioneer work.

When people do not have hope, they do not plan for the future. They actually look forward to dying. Mandela opened the eyes and minds of the African people to look to the future. The ripple effect of his socio-economic impact has lead to many more Africans are researching and investing in technology, medicine and other economic activities. Before, it was very rare find an African with a phone, and an even much more rare to find a computer. Last year, I travelled to the most rural areas, and sure enough, there was INTERNET!!!!!! People are conducting e-based businesses in the rural areas, so yes, Mandela unleashed the innovative power in the minds of the people.

I think this is a great example of someone identifying and resolving a problem to open up the possibilities for the future. Mandela's work with these people will most likely enable them to focus on the future but do we know of any innovation that has taken place from a technology standpoint. It could be something very simple and we could all learn from watching the development as they move forward and see what new ideas and inventions are created.
